Moving between Thanksgiving and New Year's adds a lot to an already busy season. Between holiday plans, family visits, and packing boxes, it's easy to feel stretched thin.

The good news: a holiday move can go smoothly with a little planning. Here are 15 tips from the Howell Home Team to help you stay organized, protect your peace, and still enjoy the season.

Strategy 1: Time Management and Decluttering

  1. Start the purge early. Go room by room before the holiday rush and donate, sell, or toss what you don't want to move. Fewer boxes means a cheaper, faster move.
  2. Create a "no-pack zone." Pick one spot for things you'll use right up until moving day, like the coffee maker, phone chargers, and the kids' favorites, so they don't get boxed up by accident.
  3. Book movers and services ASAP. Holiday weeks book up first. Lock in your movers now, and schedule utilities and internet at the new place so they're on when you arrive.
  4. Schedule a "free day." Block off one day with zero moving tasks. A break in the middle keeps everyone from burning out.
  5. Update your address with the holiday mail. File your change of address with USPS, then use your holiday cards to share the new address with friends and family.

Strategy 2: Smart Packing for Instant Holiday Comfort

  1. Create a "Holiday Essentials" box. Pack a few favorite decorations, the stockings, a string of lights, and a holiday candle. Open it first, and the new house feels like home on night one.
  2. Color-code by priority. Use colored tape or labels so movers know which room each box goes to, and you know what to unpack first.
  3. Photograph your decor. Snap pictures of the tree, mantel, and displays before taking them down. Setting up in the new home gets much easier.
  4. Pack an "open first" survival kit. Include toilet paper, paper plates, a few basic tools, medications, phone chargers, pet food, and a change of clothes for everyone.
  5. Use luggage and totes. Suitcases and bins are perfect for clothes and fragile ornaments, and they cut down on how many boxes you need.

Strategy 3: Keep the Spirit Alive with Less Pressure

  1. Say no to non-essential events. It's OK to skip a party or two this year. Your friends will understand.
  2. Delegate seasonal tasks. Let a family member host this year, or split up the cooking and shopping.
  3. Embrace minimalist decor. A wreath and a few lights go a long way. Save the full display for next year.
  4. Host a "packing party." Invite friends over for pizza and packing. Many hands make light work, and it's more fun.
  5. Budget for take-out. Plan on a few nights of take-out during the move so nobody has to cook in a half-packed kitchen.
